With so much of our lives being spent online, be that for work, socialising, research or whatever, there have to be ways to ensure we are not constantly being provided with duff information when we look up something. Take education as a very august example. In my youth I would rely 100% on my school teachers and then lecturers for the majority of the information needed to complete my studies. At junior level we were taught a lot by rote and there was very little room for doubt that Teacher was right – even our parents rarely questioned anything Teacher said! Gradually we were encouraged to make investigative trips to the school library or even the local town library, non fiction areas. We were given specific pointers by the teacher with ideas of where to start and if Teacher was really enthusiastic, further hints on how to make the most of our subject focused research; how to make effective notes by eliminating spurious material or third party ideas; heresay from uneducated friends etc. However gleaned, our information was sought from verifiable sources with few questions or doubts.
